I saw this movie on accident, at a drive-in movie theater with a double feature. I knew it would be dumb before I went in. But the idea of seeing a 3-D movie at a 59-year-old drive-in movie theater appealed to my nostalgic side, so I decided to go into the experience with a good attitude.
It was terrible. I mean clawing-your-eyes-out terrible. I mean visibly-cringing-at-the-dialogue terrible. One of the few movies I have ever seen that I can honestly say was total crap. Shark Tale was a better movie, and if you know my opinion of that flick, you realize how much that says. I could tell from the trailers that it was going to be an off-the-wall movie about a child’s imagination, so I was prepared for a certain degree of incoherence. But Shark Boy and Lava Girl just plain didn't make any sense. I've seen a few other Robert Rodriguez movies, most notably the Spy Kids series, and I can appreciate a movie oriented towards children. You have to watch the movie with a different set of expectations. But even allowing that, the movie was awful. We argued over what moments made us cringe the most as we drove home. Lava Girl would occasionally say something that was obviously supposed to be profound, and then she smile at the camera and her hair would blow in the wind. Perhaps it was an attempt at creating the next pre-pubescent hottie, but it merely succeeded in creating "What the. . . ?" moments throughout the movie. Shark Boy had several "shark frenzy" episodes that were supposed to look like cool martial art scenes, but just looked plain foolish. I was also disappointed at the 3-D, which really didn't look that good. There were a handful of shots where things looked like the came off the screen, but most of the time the glasses just made my eyes hurt. Two enormous thumbs down for Shark Boy and Lava Girl.
